Industry-Leading Design Firm Names Veteran Architect as Principal, Studio Leader

One of the nation’s leaders in integrated design, SmithGroup, has named a new principal. Jill Swensen, AIA, LEED AP, has taken on the role as principal and studio leader in SmithGroup’s Pittsburgh office. Swensen brings over 20 years of experience as an architect specializing in programming, planning, and management of complex environments.

Construction Continues on Fulton Market’s 19-Story Office Building

The construction buzz in Fulton Market, a mixed-use district in Chicago, marches on with a 19-story office tower. Developers held a groundbreaking ceremony for the project last week, although construction on the building’s foundation has been underway for several weeks. Chicago-based architectural firm, Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill (SOM), designed the 450,000 square-foot building. The tower will feature X-shaped steel cross-braces with underground parking and landscaped terraces.

San Francisco Investment Firm Acquires St. Louis Luxury Apartment Complex 

Hamilton Zanze, San Francisco-based real estate firm, partnered with Cantor Fitzgerald, L.P. to acquire Tribeca Apartments in St. Louis. The 160-unit apartment community was built in 2018 and had a 100% occupancy rate at time-of-purchase. 

Higher Standards Expected of Rental Property Owners in Hartford, Conn

The city council in Hartford, Conn. has recently adopted a new licensing program for rental properties. Hotels, apartment buildings, and group homes will also be subject to the new code, which aims to prevent neglect of the city’s rental stock. The code focuses on health hazards such as mold, infestations, and poor air quality.

Andrew J. Allison, a New York-based architect, offers advice on improving guest experiences. Allison believes hospitality professionals in the Hudson River corridor need to optimize and adapt as the area’s growth continues. As owner of AJA Architecture and Planning, based in Glen Falls, New York, Allison follows a 30-year facilities plan he developed in 1999.
