The World’s Largest White Castle Built to Handle Hurricane Force Winds

Where did it happen?
Orlando, Florida

Who was involved?
When the Orlando White Castle opened its doors on May 3rd, 2021, it was the iconic burger chain’s first Florida location and perhaps more notably, it became the largest White Castle in the world.

What was the challenge?
The real challenge was the Florida location. White Castle has been satisfying the intense burger cravings of Midwesterners since 1921. Its 377  locations are almost exclusively found in cold-weather states. They’re built to withstand ice, snow, and freezing temperatures. Hurricanes? Not so much.

What was the solution?
Building the world’s largest White Castle was just a matter of doing what they’d already been doing, only bigger. But translating this cold-weather classic to tropical storm-prone Florida required a true team effort, which included design, distribution, and application expertise. To deal with the weather and the state’s stringent NOA requirements, the team turned to Sto, using a combination of systems: StoTherm® ci and StoTherm ci MVES with stone.  Because StoTherm® ci integrates continuous insulation, innovative water-resistant barrier technology, and drainage features, it was ideal for dealing with the Sunshine State’s frequent, punishing tropical storms and hurricanes. And StoTherm ci MVES with stone made it possible to match the stone and stucco design aesthetic of White Castle restaurants while maintaining continuous insulation.

The bigger footprint meant more material, but distributor FBM Orlando had no issues sourcing everything required for a seamless build, ensuring the design could be accurately rendered by the expert applicators of Rue Quality Systems. And that’s exactly what Rue did, flawlessly executing the vision of MS  Consultants to create a weathertight building. Utilizing one of Sto’s StoGuard® air and moisture barriers over the wall assembly, they sealed the building tight and employed the continuous insulation of the Sto EPS insulation board to create an energy-efficient building. They finished it off with a beautiful stone façade, courtesy of the StoTherm ci MVES system. Together, MS Consultants, FBM Orlando, and Rue Quality Systems brought the project home, with a huge assist from StoTherm ci’s fully engineered system, the single-source solution for the building envelope.

What were the results?
Orlando, a city that does not want tourist destinations, has found itself another one. The grand opening on May 3rd saw cars lined up around the block, and its popularity hasn’t abated since, with locals and tourists alike adding the world’s largest White Castle to their already extensive list of Orlando’s must-see attractions. If there was ever any question about the classic cold-weather favorite’s appeal translating to the warm-weather climes of Florida, there isn’t any longer. The world’s largest White Castle has not yet been tested by any major weather events, but it’s stood up to wave after wave of tourists while cranking out all the tiny burgers they can eat.
