An aspect of the lighting industry that doesn’t get much notice is the world of fine-art light fixtures. There were several people showing artistic fixtures at the 2008 LightFair trade show, May 28 to 30, Las Vegas. One of the standout artists was Anne Thull of Anne Thull Fine Art Designs LLC, San Francisco. Thull is a versatile artist, designing furniture, often with integrated lighting; cabinetry, her patented translucent glass cover sleeves designed to make bare bulbs look like candles; table lamps; and limited-edition bronze light fixtures in a variety of patinas. Thull’s latest limited-edition fixture is this vineyard grapevine sconce. These fixtures start with a detailed drawing from Anne Thull that a foundry converts, with Thull’s oversight, into 3D works of art using the lost-wax process. This fixture will have a companion that will contain a nest with eggs, creating a “scene” suggesting the bird moving toward its nest—Gary L. Parr
